A guide to UK degrees and life at University for students (and staff)

Search and buy books online with iBS Enter Keyword:

How do University bookshops operate?Typically they ask academic staff for booklists. This is quite sensible, as they then stock the books which lecturers ask their students to buy. They may also order a few extra books in specific areas to complement the main texts. Academic staff get the books stocked which they want students to buy - students generally find the books they want on the shelves. So what's the problem? Pure and simple - price.
What kind of discount does your University bookshop give you? 20%, 10%, 0%? Try asking them for discount. Ask them whether they pay the same kind of business rates as a bookshop located in the high street. How much do they spend on advertising? Where does the profit they make go?To put it bluntly, the chances are your University bookshop is overcharging you. Ask them for discount. If they won't give it, take your custom elsewhere. You have two choices. The first is a friendly, local bookshop, which would just love to pick up academic orders. Tell them you are dissatisfied with the prices in the University bookshop and want to purchase from them - with discount.

They may give you a better deal. It used to be the case that it took several weeks for books to arrive, but now bookshops can get most books in three days

Your other alternative is buying over the internet. You purchase the book from an online bookshop and a few days later it arrives. Even with postage it will almost certainly work out cheaper than buying from the University bookshop. Check out the prices and see. If you buy several books at once you will save even more money.
