A guide
to UK degrees and life at University for students (and staff)
How do you choose a University? New vs Old In 1992 the Polytechnics were redesignated as Universities, following the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act . Previously set up as institutions teaching technical/practical courses, the Polytechnics had for many years been running honours degree courses. But they weren't allowed to award their own degrees. This had to be done under the control of the CNAA (Council for National Academic Awards) and required rigorous inspections of proposed courses to ensure they were meeting national standards. Much more rigorous than anything the old universities had to go through. Now of course every University has to be inspected by the Quality Assurance Agency. The difference between Old and New Universities is starting to blur, but if you look at many of the league tables provided, you will see that old Universities tend to be towards the top. Much of this comes down to money. Universities are funded in several different ways. We can break this down into three main areas: Funding for teaching students, funding for carrying out research and private income. Let's take a look at these.
